HISTORY OF A NAME (Polaris)
The research for the name of a new-constitute Club to submit to the Rotary International maybe meant one of the first moments
of confrontation between the founding members. We intend to respect the request for finding a name that could connect the Club to its own
territory.
In Turin there are 17 Rotary Club else: just one can get the privilege of using the name of the city, eight clubs else
occupied the cardinal points, another Club was set on the 45th parallel, one of them wanted to point out its collocation in the
European contest and five Club else connected theirs names to important places for the Turin people. Of course there are more places in our
city that we could choose and became theirs mouthpieces, but.looking for a connection with the territory why do not just turn our nose
upwards?
The pole-star is the shining star closest to the rotation axis of the Earth northwards.
When the Earth turns seems to turn around it and, doing so, make of it the Northern Star. Polaris is a star of magnitude two, then it isn't the
lightest star, but it's there, easy to find in the Little Bear. There's no need to be ancient navigators or wayfarers to search for it and find it, even
in our noisy and bright nights, it's there. Its name also identifies the project of a Turin's society to realize a space vector.
This name just sounded deeply evocative to us, it recalls to the consistency of a route that started before than us, to a direction to which
it's possible to tend, even coming from different directions, to a choice that's there, discreet and bright, impossible not to see, but that
will remain silent if somebody would turn to somewhere else.
Don't you find anything rotarian in this idea?
HISTORY OF A LOGO
 |
The Rotary wheel in the middle of a shining star on a blue ground.
The immediacy in drawing as first proposal the sky-line of this logo accorded to the immediate agreement of the rotarian colleagues,
that approved it at once, among the various proposals presented.
|
We identified, namely, at once with that logo, because through it we recognize ourselves in the main values of the rotarian spirit.
The energy of the rotarian spirit in the everyday life of the rotarians of all the continents, blends into the name and into the logo of this young
Club with the evocative power that the pole-star always had and forever will have as the guidance of the navigators of all the seas of all the
continents.
But we also feel compelled to recall the history of the same Rotary's logo, the wheel pin with its spokes that refers to the genuine strength
of the "arms of the founders", that unite in one point, that is the fulcrum of spiritual energy, able to make turn the engagement of everyone at the
service of the others.
And so consolidate the idea of a logo that could at once recall visually the world of Rotary: it is the same energy gathered in the hearth of a
star that through its rays stretches out into the blue sky to light the human route and the human thought.
It's a simple and direct image that recalls to the name of our Club and to the energy that compels us to take part in it.
